Semi-aniline leather is made with aniline dyes and an additional fine layer of matching pigment. The pigment is applied to give the leather a more uniform color while maintaining the natural leather grain including natural markings. A clear protective top coat (water-based urethane or paraffin wax) is then applied to protect against stains and wear while retaining the natural look of aniline leather. Over the years, "semi-aniline leather" has become more of a generic term as tanneries have moved towards finishes that have a greater ratio of pigment to dyes to improve color consistency and durability. Our mulitone Jazz Collection (see below) is one such example. By contrast, Our Restoration Collections are traditional semi-anilines where only a fine layer of pigment is applied and the natural grain, including markings, is visible and desired. Only the "best condition" cowhides can be used for this type of semi-aniline leather
